Six years ago, for my birthday, my husband gave me a Vollis Simpson Whirligig.
Simpson's Whirligigs are on display all over the country in museums and public spaces. He's a local artist who began creating his whirligigs in retirement, erecting them on his property in Wilson County. The New York Times recently published a wonderful article on Simpson, as well as a slideshow of some of his creations. Needless to say, I'm proud to have an original in my back yard.
This past week my husband finished painting the two adirondack chairs we bought over Memorial Day weekend. They're just right flanking the whirligig in the back corner in front of the fence. And in case you're wondering, the whirligig really does spin when the wind blows (and it does get wind, even in this somewhat protected corner).
And here's the view from the chairs. . .
The loss of the trees from behind the fence on the right isn't so obvious from this perspective.

Who needs blooms?
I have so many pictures of new blooms in the garden, but no time to write about them - and who needs pictures of flowers when you have grandchildren around? These two precious boys enjoyed our new adirondack chairs in the corner of the back yard this past weekend. The chairs were unassembled when we purchased them Memorial Day weekend. They are now assembled and primed, awaiting a couple of coats of paint - and we are already enjoying them!
