This is the first year the birds haven't eaten the crabapples before they began to turn red.
I decided to try growing basil from seed this year, and it's been a huge success! We can't eat it fast enough to keep it from flowering, but I just cut stems and add them to my vases of flowers.
Not all insects in the garden are bad. I saw two beautiful dragonflies Saturday and was able to get a picture of one of them. . .along with a picture of one of the ever present bumblebees.
The Luna Hibiscus is amazing during the month of June! Maybe this will be the summer that it stays gorgeous right through July.

Anna and I had fresh basil on a pizza in New York earlier this month, and she loved it! She's talked about it several times since and wants to try it on pizza at home. Do you think it's too late in the season to buy a basil plant? I really enjoy your blog. Several people in my neighborhood have a luna hibiscus. They are so dramatic and gorgeous! Maybe I'll look for one of those when I'm looking for a basil plant...
Lisa, I don't think it's too late to buy a basil plant. If you can't find one, I'll be happy to share some of mine.
Ginny, I got a basil plant last night at Lowe's, but I can't find a luna hibiscus. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen one in a garden center. Any ideas where I can get one?
Lisa, I bought my luna hibiscus at Lowe's, but haven't seen one there in quite a while. I've had mine for several years. You could ask at a local nursery, but it may be too late in the summer to get one. I will have seeds from mine at the end of the summer if you're interested in trying to start one from seed. You can order a Super Rose Hibiscus - looks like the white Luna but the flower is pink - from Spring Hill Nursery (www.springhillnursery.com)but they won't ship it until the fall. You could plant it in the fall and it would be established by next summer. I've had mine in a large planter instead of in the ground and like having it up on the deck where I have a closer view of it.
Glad you found a basil plant! Let me know if you want some seeds from my Luna.
Definitely want seeds! Thanks. That's how I keep my moon flower from year to year.
Just called Ace. They have them! I'd still like seeds, though.
I'll be sure to save you some seeds. Glad Ace has a plant for you!
Do you share your moonflower seeds? If so, I would love some.
I'd love for you to have some moon flower seeds. I'll let you know when the pods have popped open. My luna hibiscus is red. Can't wait to see the blooms.
Make sure you check my blog today!
