As of my last post, I couldn't bear to take an "after" picture of the side yard after the neighbor removed all of the trees on the other side of the fence. But I've decided it needs to be documented, and my husband took a picture last week. I'm reposting the "before" picture, also. Sadly, I realize that there was a "before" and an "after" but the "after" might as well be "never again in my lifetime."
Notice the crane in the background - yes, the trees are still coming down.

A few fast-growing ornamental trees (crepe myrtle, etc.) strategically placed along your side of the fence, and lots of sunshine, could do wonders to vanquish the sadness.
